METLEN Energy & Metal hosted the London Metal Exchange’s (LME) Chairman at the company’s historic ‘Aluminium of Greece’ (AoG) plant in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia in central Greece on Tuesday 2 December, in a visit that affirmed the significance of the facility for Greek and European industry. John Williamson, head of the world’s leading reference market for metals, was accompanied by Georgina Hallett, Chief Sustainability Officer and Head of Physicals Market at LME. Also participating in the visit was Panos Lolos, President of the Association of Industries of Central Greece, highlighting the importance of cooperation between Greek industry and international markets.
During their visit, the LME executives were given a tour of the production units by Dimitris Stefanidis, METLEN’s Chief Executive Director for Metals, Ioannis Karnachoritis, EPALME Plant Director, Dimitris Kakarouchas, Administrative Director of AoG, and other senior METLEN executives.
The visitors were thoroughly informed about the production processes, technological infrastructure and high operational and safety standards implemented by METLEN.
The briefing also focused on the company’s landmark investment in the production of gallium at the Aluminium of Greece plant, a project which has been officially included among the 47 Strategic Projects of the European Union for Critical Raw Materials, under the CRMA Regulation.
This vertically integrated project includes bauxite mining, the expansion of the alumina unit, and the production of 50 MT of gallium per annum. The total strategic investment of €295.5 million strengthens Greece’s international position in the global critical raw materials market, ensuring the supply of bauxite, alumina and gallium, materials which are vital for modern industry.
