Illumination of the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion

In 2004, in the context of the Athens Olympic Games, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture illuminated the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. This new lighting created a striking visual experience, elevating Sounion's status as an international destination for thousands of visitors.

Twenty years later, technological advancements have progressed significantly. The lighting system at Sounion had become outdated and worn over time. In response to the Ministry's proposal, METLEN Energy and Metals, under the leadership of its President Evangelos Mytilineos, eagerly undertook the study and implementation of the new lighting project, demonstrating the company’s strong commitment to promoting and preserving our cultural heritage.

The new lighting of the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion will be officially inaugurated on Monday, September 16, 2024, at 7:30 PM, by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni and distinguished guests from Greece and abroad in attendance.

The lighting design was curated by the internationally acclaimed Eleftheria Deko.  Her innovative approach uniquely illuminates the Temple of Poseidon, enhancing its archaeological and architectural significance while adding new dimensions to the monument.

Special attention was given to ensure that the visual experience of visitors during the day remains undisturbed. All installation elements and lighting fixtures were placed in such a way as not to obstruct the site tour or cause visual disturbance to visitors. The positions of the lights, along with the cable paths and electrical installations, were carefully designed and placed in appropriate locations to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the site.

The illumination of the Temple will be broadcast internationally, as many museums, universities, educational institutions, cultural centers, chambers of commerce worldwide, and international news agencies will live-stream the event.

In Greece, it will be broadcast live by ERT and through the link: "A Journey to Light - YouTube."

The illumination event will conclude with a concert by the distinguished Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos, who will present a musical composition paying tribute to Greece's cultural heritage. The concert will feature leading Greek artists such as Dimitris Basis, Iro Saia, and Zacharias Karounis, accompanied by ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra, under the direction of Stavros Xarchakos.
