Strategy

METLEN recognizes the crucial role of local communities in the success and sustainability of its operations and is committed to fostering relationships based on respect, transparency and cooperation. The Company actively contributes to the social and economic development of the areas where it operates, through the creation and maintenance of jobs, the support of local businesses and the implementation of targeted social investments. Through strengthening infrastructure and promoting educational initiatives, METLEN promotes the sustainable development and social well-being of communities. This strategy strengthens the Company's resilience, cultivates a strong network of trust with local communities and institutional bodies and ensures adaptability and continuous improvement within an ever-changing business environment. Governance

METLEN has established a comprehensive governance framework for the management of sustainability issues, which is integrated into the Company's core decision-making and oversight processes. The role of the Management is clearly defined and ensures continuous supervision and strategic guidance on sustainability issues.

In particular, the Sustainable Development Committee, as a committee of the Board of Directors, is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the sustainable development strategy, approving relevant policies and monitoring the Company's ESG performance. The Committee meets regularly and cooperates with the Directorate-General for Corporate Governance and Sustainable Development, which plays a crucial role in coordinating all sustainability issues within the Company. The governance of sustainability issues is supported by specially defined organisational structures, which include teams and sustainability officers in each Business Sector and a key subsidiary. ESG thematic pillar managers work with central and local management teams, ensuring coordination, monitoring progress and providing technical guidance, with the aim of systematically integrating the principles of sustainable development across the Company's range of activities.

At the same time, METLEN applies a systematic due diligence approach to manage actual and potential significant sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities. This approach is based on the international guidelines for responsible business conduct and includes: identification and impact assessment processes, setting targets, action plans, monitoring mechanisms, taking corrective actions, consulting stakeholders and promoting value chain partnerships.

Through these mechanisms, METLEN ensures that sustainability issues are integrated into its business strategy and day-to-day operation, enhancing long-term value creation for all stakeholders.

Impact, Risk & Opportunity Management

METLEN implements a comprehensive policy framework to support local communities in the areas where it operates, promoting transparency, fair treatment and sustainable development. Through stable channels of consultation, institutionalized complaint submission mechanisms and active social dialogue, it ensures the effective participation of communities and the timely address of social and environmental issues. Strengthening the "social license" is a strategic priority for METLEN, with a focus on continuous improvement and alignment with international due diligence standards. The Company undertakes targeted social actions with emphasis on empowering vulnerable groups and promoting social cohesion. Through partnerships with non-profit organizations, public organizations and local authorities, the Company promotes actions that improve education, health, infrastructure and social cohesion, while protecting cultural and natural heritage. METLEN leverages innovative solutions and aims at sustainable development, incorporating the principles of corporate social responsibility at every level of its operation. Through continuous dialogue and systematic assessment of social demands, METLEN ensures maximum added value for its areas of activity, actively contributing to the creation of opportunities and the shaping of a fairer and more sustainable future.

Metrics and Targets

METLEN has set as a central quantitative target for the period 2020-2025, to increase the number of beneficiaries of its social programs to 550,000 citizens. At the same time, the Aluminium Plant of Greece of the Metals Sector has set specific goals which include increasing social investments in the health and education sectors by 10% and 20% respectively. At the level of quality objectives, the Company seeks to enhance local employment through the creation of quality jobs and the development of the local economy, giving priority to the selection of domestic and local suppliers. In addition, it is committed to contributing fairly to the clean energy transition, while maintaining and strengthening the institution of consultation with local stakeholders in order to capture the needs of communities and explore new opportunities for cooperation. Also, METLEN aims to strengthen social cohesion through the implementation of selected social programs, which are aligned with the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2024, METLEN significantly strengthened its social policy through 30 social programmes and actions that benefited more than 184,000 citizens in various sectors, such as education, health, social inclusion and infrastructure development. The Company invested in infrastructure projects, the improvement of school and sports facilities, as well as the protection of cultural heritage, while creating a number of new jobs by supporting local economies through the enhancement of local employment and the strengthening of supply chain links at the local level. Especially:

  • 30 social programs and actions were implemented at central and local level.
  • 184,000 people benefited, directly and indirectly, from the various actions of the Society.
  • 474 new jobs were created in 2024, and a total of 3,874 new jobs in 15 years.
  • 90% of the workforce comes from local communities.
  • Projects were implemented to upgrade school infrastructure, kindergartens and sports facilities.
  • More than 4 million euros were invested. In infrastructure projects and improvement of the quality of life in areas with RES projects.
  • Social groceries, cultural and sporting events at the local level were supported.
