"European Bauxites S.A.", a subsidiary of METLEN Energy & Metals, is one of the largest companies in Europe engaged in bauxite mining.
The company was established after the acquisition of IMERYS Bauxite Greece by METLEN and its merger with Delphi Distomo M.A.M.E. making a strong contribution to the mining and metallurgical industry of Greece and Europe.
Right now METLEN is the largest bauxite producer in the European Union, strengthening the company's strategic position both in Europe and globally.
"European Bauxites" is integrated into the Metals Sector (M Metals) of METLEN and is involved in bauxite mining in the Fokida region. METLEN significantly increases its annual production capacity, ensuring its autonomy in raw materials for the "Aluminium of Greece" plant, the only fully vertically integrated unit producing bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminum in the European Union.
The most important known – and commercially exploitable – bauxite deposits in Greece are located in the region of Sterea, Mainland Greece. Their exploitation in the area of Distomon, in the Prefecture of Viotia, dates back to 1930. Until 1961, when the alumina and aluminium production plant was established, the entire quantity of Greek bauxites produced was destined for export.
The integration of "European Bauxites" into the Metals Sector (M Metals) of METLEN not only boosts bauxite production but also allows METLEN to make significant investments in the development of new deposits, equipment upgrades, environmental restoration of mining areas, and the production of strategically important metals like gallium.
The new company, under the name "EUROPEAN BAUXITES SINGLE MEMBER S.A.", was registered with the General Commercial Registry (GEMI) on June 18, 2024, with registration number 005035501000.
"European Bauxites" plays a pivotal role in the local economy of Fokida, offering significant employment opportunities. It directly employs more than 500 highly skilled workers in the mining sector, while it also creates further indirect employment opportunities by strengthening local industry and boosting economic activity in the area.
At a time when energy and industrial challenges are constantly increasing, the acquisition of "European Bauxites" by METLEN not only expands its production capacity but also ensures the sustainable and competitive growth of the M Metals Division, while simultaneously strengthening the Greek and European economy.
Unique in its kind, “Vagonetto” – Fokis Mining park is the first Greek thematic park in Fokida (Central Greece) that gives visitors the opportunity to discover and explore the process of bauxite mining.
